Earlier this week, Redskins tight end Fred Davis, who has been inactive the last two weeks, said during a radio interview that he has not requested a trade away from the team.

Davis also said that he hasn’t spoken with coach Mike Shanahan about his status in several weeks, something Shanahan said wasn’t true while speaking to reporters on Thursday. Shanahan said he’s spoken to Davis about why he isn’t part of the lineup on Sundays — limited roster space at tight end with Logan Paulsen, Jordan Reed and Niles Paul — and what he needs to do in order to get back into the mix.

Shanahan was also asked about the possibility of a trade involving Davis and stopped well short of saying that Davis would remain with the team. Shanahan explained that the team had to weigh the potential return in a deal against the chance that they might have a need for Davis later this season.

“That’s what people do when you make a decision if you think you need a draft choice, or if you think that person can help you later in the year, especially with an injury,” Shanahan said, via the Washington Post. “The thing I think that Fred has done, is he had an excellent week of practice. Any time people compete, you feel good about who they are and what they do.”

The trade deadline falls on Tuesday, so the Redskins’ ultimate choice on that front won’t remain unknown much longer.
