Cinco de Mayo at the Howard Theater was positively lit. The DMV bred, R&B hit maker Devin White in conjunction with his entertainment company BLAQ Crown, presented Momentum: An Evening of DMV Excellence. White’s vision was to utilize the Howard Theater affectionately known as “The Theater for the people”.
He wanted to use a place rich in historical value. “My vision was to showcase some amazing talent on the same stage Duke Ellington chose to bring back big band jazz.” Said White. White, as well as BLAQ Crown Entertainment worked tediously to make sure Momentum was iconic and legendary.
White secured two of the best to host the evening’s festivities. He selected radio talk show host and Team Next MC co-founder James Yankee and DJ Sixth Sense of the Russ Parr morning show. Team Next MC sat down with Devin White a while ago and they saw real potential in him. Team Next MC members: DJ Sixth Sense, Meko (who was also a performer on the bill) and James Yankee have been fans of his work and supporters of the movement ever since. “Devin White is very comfortable in his skin and it shows through in his music.” Sixth Sense said.
Momentum provided a showcase of several talents handpicked by White and some selected contest winners from an audition held by BLAQ Crown Ent. And Carolina Kitchen restaurant. These performers included singers, dancers, rappers and a modeling group called Models Inc. who ripped the stage with synchronized steps over music while showcasing eclectic fashion trends.
Meko performed her new song “Boss” and showed the crowd what a female boss really looks like. The catchy tune was well-received.
Singer Lolita Leopard described performing at the Howard Theater during her own set as “a huge deal”. While back up dancing for performer Marcus Canty 2 years ago, Leopard found herself wishing one day she could grace the stage with her own personal set. She wrote her name on the infamous signature walland spoke her affirmation into existence. Momentum gave her a real opportunity to fulfill a dream.
Jasmine Franklin, A singer hailing from the small town of Kalamazoo and another member of BLAQ Crown Ent. described the evening as a personal triumph. “We have performed at the Howard Theater before but tonight is the first time it is for our very own show.” Franklin said. She performed a raw freestyle that gave a clear interpretation of who she is and the messages she strives to convey.
“This show should serve as a picture of evolution for these artists. It should display where they have come from as well as what they are now accomplishing.” said White.
White performed a collection of all of his music recorded over the past 4 years. He gave the audience an inside peak of his heart and soul and they were grateful as they grooved to the harmonious melodies. His next single entitled “Adore You” is set to drop May 29th at the Fillmore Silver Spring.
A show like this provides a forum for upcoming talent to showcase all of their hard work. It was refreshing to see the pride and happiness they felt coming off an iconic stage with applause on their heels. Momentum was indeed a momentous occasion.
